Gracia

Popular with young people and families, Grācia was once a small village located outside of Barcelona, until when in the 19th century it was joined to the city with the construction of the Eixample.

The Exaimple’s architect Cerdā originally planned for Grācia to be knocked down to make way for his new design; but we can all be thankful this never happened, as Grācia is a charming neighbourhood with a low rise village feel, pedestrian streets and popular plaįas with terraces – the ideal place to relax, enjoy some great restaurants and a caņa or two. As such it is also a delightful area to book a barcelona apartment in, with a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. What is more, being mostly pedestrian it is perfect for families with young children.

The area is some 5 minutes from Plaįa Catalunya by metro, or walking can be reached via a pleasant stroll along Passeig de Grācia. Grācia also offers easy access to the Sagrada Familia, which is a 15 minute walk away.

The neighbourhood is famous for its festival during the third week of August when the area is transformed with music and partying in the street.

Heighbours compete with one another for the prize of most exotically and extravagantly decorated street, picking themes from around the world, cinema, theatre or literature, and transforming their streets into a riot of colour and decoration. At night time there are free concerts and street parties for everyone to enjoy.

Another popular feature are Castellers – human pyramids reaching 5 or 6 levels high!

Gracia also boasts a park designed by Gaudi, park Guell. The park was designed and landscaped by tyhe architect, and contains wonderful examples of his exuberant design in some of the buildings and sculpture. Its the perfect spot for a stroll, from where you can take in views right over the city.

Much of Grācias charm is owed to its conserving a village atmosphere and slower pace of life. At night time Gracia comes alive and enjoys a different atmosphere, though it remains relaxed and you will not find clubs playing loud music here.
