In Catalunya Easter is a relatively quiet affair compared with other southern parts of the country. One of the main happening is the blessing of the palms on diumenge de rams (Palm Sunday) when people flock to the cathedral holding palm fronds bought from stalls around the city; these are said to bring luck to households. On Good Friday, various small processions and blessings take place in front of the cathedral.

Outside Barcelona in surrounding villages it is traditional to mount a play based on the Passion of Christ. One of the best-known takes place in Esparraguerra and has a cast of more than 700 people.

Another long established tradition that takes place on Easter Monday is the giving of monas by Godparents to their Godchildren; elaborately made chocolate eggs which in recent years have taken on the form of celebrities and even popular soccer stars!

Easter is the start of Spring as well so it's the perfect time of year to escape chillier climes and head for Barcelona.
